Hypnosis for Childbirth

Hypnotherapy as the Perfect Preparation for Childbirth

Are you worried or stressed about the birthing experience? Is the worry of what’s coming up spoiling your excitement and enjoyment of the upcoming event?

Hypnosis has, for many years, been used during childbirth for achieving deep relaxation and pain relief. In recent times, it has become an increasingly popular option for women looking for ways to fully enjoy the natural birth experience whilst feeling safe, calm and confident.

Hypnotherapy will help you address any fears you or your partner may have about birth. Birthing with hypnosis will also help your birthing partner learn how to support you in a positive way.

According to Wikipedia

“The term hypnobirthing is used in the hypnotherapy and medical professions for the use of hypnosis or hypnotherapy in childbirth.

The movement started with the work of English obstetrician Grantly Dick-Read (1890 – 1959), and culminating in his book Childbirth without Fear, first published in 1942. The work was further developed by Jacqueline Vincent Priya , Michelle Leclaire O’Neill and later Marie Mongan in America. References to the work of Michel Odent also occur in Hypnobirthing material.

The use of hypnobirthing has become widely known among women and in obstetric units as an increasingly popular means of achieving a natural childbirth”.

How I can help you

If possible I like to see the mother and birthing partner together at first. It is important that your attendee and midwife understand the basics of hypnosis so they can be supportive.

  • I start by interviewing you and your birthing partner to uncover any fears either of you have, and to explain how everything works. Basically I help you get clarity and confidence about how hypnosis birthing is going to work for you.
  • I teach you self-hypnosis and how you can tap into that enjoyable, relaxing yet focused state instantly and how your partner can reinforce that during birthing.
  • Using hypnotherapy I can help release any fears and build positive suggestions to prepare you for birthing. I will also provide you with a CD to listen to while you are pregnant. Many women love to use the audio resource every day to build a powerful habit.

My practical experience along with my thorough training combine with a personal passion for helping women and their families during this exciting, though often stressful, time.

Hypnotherapy is a very natural approach to birthing

I bring my own experience in natural childbirth. I have given birth to four babies. My first was born in hospital in 1965 and I remember thinking afterwards that there must be a better way. I had my next three births at home. However, it was after my third home birth in 1984 that I began to develop my understanding of how I birthed. This understanding came from practice and listening to other women’s’ stories of natural childbirth. I believe if I had known hypnois before giving birth it would have helped me relax and release my own personal fears about childbirth.

I have attended numerous home and hospital births and in the late 80′s I co-facilitated a group with home birth midwife Jenny Johnston, which supported women in natural childbirth.

I combine a wonderfully enjoyable hypnotherapy process with a personal conviction that every woman is unique and has her own way of birthing. I’m determined to help you believe in yourself, feel absolutely resourced, confident and excited about this magical event in your life.
